EDI Technology
What is EDI?
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is an architecture of standard formats that eases the exchange of business data between information systems that might not otherwise be able to communicate. Since standard formats are defined and used at each end of the communication, data can be moved without human intervention or rekeying. EDI is a way to improve accuracy, productivity and customer service, while reducing costs and minimizing paper and storage costs.

In 1979, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) chartered the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12 to develop uniform standards for interindustry electronic exchange of business transactions-electronic data interchange (EDI). In 1986, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) approved the the international United Nations Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport (UN/EDIFACT), an EDI standard designed to meet the needs of both government and private industry. Generally, X12 can be thought of as US-based and EDIFACT can be thought of as non-US, principally European-based.

Another player in the EDI realm is Extensible Markup Language, or XML. XML is probably the ultimate future of EDI, but is a broad standard that is not as well-defined for particular business transactions as is X12 or EDIFACT. However, work is underway to marry the well-defined standards of X12 and EDIFACT with the widely-used XML arena.

We Can Help
The Intellection Group has developed, as part of our core framework, the ability to handle X12, EDIFACT and XML business transactions in a store-and-forward architecture, allowing asynchronous transaction communication between business systems, even if separated by oceans and continents. Our methodology includes encrypting and compressing the traffic, which maximizes security and performance. Because it's integrated with our framework, we can easily join EDI capabilities to web-based business applications. We can also host this capability for you, which provides a complete turnkey service solution.
